About the book

The City of the Gods

When the god of free will wages war against the gods of fate and destiny, the battlefield isn’t the heavens; it’s Earth. And the weapon? A single, unsuspecting girl.

Chelise is just a child trying to survive the chaos of a fractured family when the gods thrust her into the center of their cosmic feud. Chosen as the subject of a divine wager, she becomes the living test of an eternal question: are our lives guided by destiny, or shaped by choice? With her life in peril at every turn, Chelise must rely on the guidance of her guardian angels to navigate a series of trials far beyond her understanding. All the while, gods look on, some with hope, others with malice, as the forces of good and evil, chaos and control, collide.

In this high-stakes combat between preordained fate and the power of free will, Chelise’s journey will not only change the trajectory of her life but potentially the course of humanity itself. In this war where only one truth can prevail… which would you choose?

About Me

Jason Patterson

Dr. Jason A. Patterson is an orthopedic surgeon based in Arizona, where he lives with his wife and three children. The City of the Gods marks his debut as an author—an unexpected creative venture for someone who hadn’t written more than a paragraph since high school.

Having grown up in a divorced home, Jason and his wife share the belief that our circumstances don’t define who we become. They hold that each of us has the power to shape our own story—to choose our own path—with the free will God has given us.

Why I Wrote This Book

The story was inspired by Jason’s children’s fascination with Greek mythology and his wife’s experiences growing up. What began as a personal project for his family evolved into something deeper—a story written for them, but meant for anyone who might see reflections of their own lives within it.

Drawn to questions of faith and meaning, Jason wanted to weave his lifelong interest in religion into a fictional world. His love for medicine, sailing, and flying also finds its way into the book, shaping the story’s sense of wonder and discovery.
